Minecraft Dungeons II Gear: 4 Armor Slots and Talismans
This guide covers what changed in the equipment system for Minecraft Dungeons II, released on 29 September 2026.
Equipment slots double from six to twelve, armor expands to four slots, and a new category called talismans is added. Players who put serious time into the original will find this the most disorienting part, so here is what to know going in.
This article is based on pre-release public information: the official site, the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, and hands-on preview coverage. I will add hands-on notes after release.

How many equipment slots does Minecraft Dungeons II have?
The answer: twice as many as the original — twelve.
▼ Slots in the original and the sequel
| Slot | Original | Sequel |
|---|---|---|
| Melee weapon | 1 | 1 |
| Ranged weapon | 1 | 1 |
| Armor | 1 | 4 |
| Artifacts | 3 | 3 |
| Talismans | None | 3 |
| Total | 6 slots | 12 slots |
The original gave you melee, ranged, armor and three artifacts — six slots. The sequel adds three more armor slots and three talisman slots on top.
Are there character classes?
The answer: no. There is no class to choose — what you wear defines your character.
The developers describe this design as “You are what you wear.” It is the same principle as the original, but with double the slots the range of combinations widens noticeably.
Ability descriptions are now readable in detail from the inventory, so the original’s recurring question of “what does this effect actually do?” is easier to answer.
Why does armor going from one slot to four matter?
The answer: this is the single biggest change to equipment.
Armor in the original was a single slot, which in practice meant one decision: wear whatever has the highest power number. In the sequel you are combining four pieces, which puts armor at the centre of your build.
▼ What trips up players from the original
▶ One armor slot in the original meant there was barely a choice to make
▶ Four slots in the sequel mean you have to split roles between them
▶ Leaving a slot empty means discarding that much performance
If you got by in the original on “armor is just the biggest number”, this is the habit you will need to change.
What are talismans?
The answer: unique passive items that level up according to how long you keep them equipped.
There are three talisman slots, and they behave unlike weapons or armor. They grow while you play with them on, and they are obtained only from special quests and hidden locations.
▼ A talisman that has been shown
Bone of Tastiness
▶ Summons a wolf companion
▶ Grants an automatic revive
Given that they grow with equipped time, I expect it will pay to equip a talisman as soon as you find one and leave it on. That is inference from the described mechanic rather than confirmed behaviour, though — growth rate and caps need checking on the released game.
Do enchantments still work the same way?
The answer: yes. Weapon enchantments are still in the sequel.
One published example is a customisation where defeating an enemy leaves a healing pool on the ground. If you got comfortable with how enchanting works in the original, that knowledge carries over directly.
One open question: in the original, salvaging an enchanted item refunded every point spent. Whether the sequel does the same has not been announced.
What does the expanded rarity system mean for you?
The answer: item rarity has more tiers than in the original.
More tiers means more room to filter for good rolls, but also wider variance between two copies of the same item. If “the good gear never drops” was your complaint in the original, this is the part to keep an eye on.
What should you know before you start?
▶ Slots go from 6 to 12. Avoiding empty slots matters even more than before
▶ Four armor slots become the centre of your build
▶ Talismans grow while equipped. Put them on as soon as you get them
▶ Enchantment knowledge carries over from the original
▶ More rarity tiers mean more room for filtering gear
Summary
▶ Released 29 September 2026 (Japanese physical edition 30 September)

▶ Armor goes from 1 slot to 4, moving builds to centre on armor
