What I remember first is the temperature of the setting. Not cold as such, but the sense of being kept for a long time in a space that is continuously chilled.
The physical cold and the rigidity of the relationships around the case overlapped almost immediately. With the setup clear from the start, I found myself following the situation rather than thinking ahead of it.

Narrating through Takanashi rather than Takao is what keeps the series readable. The reader watches Takao from Takanashi’s position, so her strangeness never lands directly.
The series had passed 3.9 million copies as of May 2026, and a TV anime aired from January 2 to April 3, 2025 (produced by project No.9). The author, Mikito Chinen, was born in Okinawa in 1978, trained as an internist at Jikei University School of Medicine, and has been nominated four times for the Japan Booksellers’ Award.
The structure with “terror” out in front
As the title says, terrorism is up front here: a bomb threat, a highly public facility, a time limit. All presented early, which gives it the face of a social-crime story more than a medical mystery.
Reading on, though, what is actually depicted is the process of eliminating possibilities one by one under restricted conditions, not destruction.
I stopped there. The tension I had imagined from the word “terror” did not fully match the quality of the information accumulating. What I felt was composure rather than commotion.

How low temperature constrains behaviour
The cold-storage setting is the defining element. Not merely unusual: the constraints — people cannot move freely, judgment dulls, nobody can stay long — are built into the flow of the story.
What stayed most is that when someone explains why they could not do something, it usually resolves to the environment rather than to will.
The restriction imposed by cold is impartial, and the panic and miscalculation it produces are drawn as things that could happen to anyone. Following that accumulation, I felt I was reading the conditions themselves rather than a plot.
Takao’s distance looks different
Her position does not change much. But perhaps because of the nature of the case, her words and actions read colder, and the gap in temperature with those around her is stark.
That is reassuring in places and snags in others. Under a time limit especially, her judgments are rational while the emotional register is left hanging.
It made me newly aware of the series-wide sense that “correct” and “acceptable” are not necessarily the same.

Reading as accumulation of fact
The structure is relatively legible and the information is presented in order. So it becomes less about chasing a trick than about which facts stay in your head, and in what order.
Several times I wondered “is this important, or is it background?” — and looking back, that uncertainty was itself part of the experience.
Rather than everything connecting neatly, it is a matter of touching one cold fragment after another.
