Ameku Takao Reading Order: All 22 Volumes, Complete Editions and the Two Subtitles Explained

Short answer: read the Ameku Takao series in publication order. There is exactly one exception, Sphere no Shitenshi, which is chronologically the earliest story in the series.

The complication is that “Complete Edition” reissues and brand-new volumes are interleaved, and the subtitle alternates between “Suiri Karute” and “Jiken Karute”. Looking at a shelf tells you nothing about the order. I had the same problem starting out.

This article lays out all 22 volumes of the Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha Bunko edition in publication order, marking which are short story collections, which are novels, and which are reissues. Each links to my review.

Today, December 4, 2026, the 22nd volume Ikusagami no Hiho is released, bringing the run to 22 books.

Three things to know first

The confusion The answer
“Suiri Karute” against “Jiken Karute”? Suiri Karute = short story collection, Jiken Karute = novel. Not two separate storylines
What is a “Complete Edition”? The older Shincho Bunko nex series reissued by Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha with additions and new material
What order? Publication order. The only exception is Sphere no Shitenshi

Suiri Karute against Jiken Karute

The subtitle tells you the format. Not knowing this makes the shifts between volumes confusing.

Subtitle Format How it reads
Suiri Karute Short stories Each case resolves in one story. Easy in short sittings
Jiken Karute Novel One case followed to the end. Sustained tension

Suiri Karute volumes collect stories from the magazines Shosetsu Shincho and yom yom with new material added; Jiken Karute volumes are novels written for paperback. They alternate almost throughout, so reading in order alternates format.

If a volume feels different in texture from the last one, check the subtitle. The author has not changed approach.

What “Complete Edition” means

The series began in October 2014 under Shincho Bunko nex, serialised in Shosetsu Shincho and yom yom.

From October 2023, Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha Bunko began reissuing that run as “Complete Editions”, with additions and newly written material — the first volume, for instance, gains a new short story.

Start with the Complete Editions. There is no need to hunt down the older printings, and the Complete Editions are what is in circulation.

Entirely new volumes appear alongside them: 13 Complete Editions plus 9 new books make 22.

All 22 volumes in publication order

Sorted by release date. Several months released two or three at once, which is why the titles alone give no clue.

Sixteen volumes appeared in the seven months from October 2023 to April 2024. That burst is the reason nobody can tell where to start. Think of that period as one short story collection plus one novel per month and it resolves.

From October 2024 onward only new volumes appear, at a calmer pace.

Only Sphere no Shitenshi breaks the chronology

Publication order matches story chronology, with one exception: Sphere no Shitenshi (fourth).

It covers a case in July, just after Yu Takanashi is assigned to General Diagnostics. The first story of volume one, “Awa”, takes place four months after that assignment.

Strictly by chronology, then, Sphere no Shitenshi comes first.

Approach Recommendation
Publication order (start with volume one) Recommended. The setup arrives at the right pace
Chronological order (start with Sphere no Shitenshi) Possible, but it means opening with a novel

I would take publication order. Sphere no Shitenshi is a novel driven by the pressure of a closed ward — a demanding entry point. Volume one is a short story collection, which suits getting used to Takao and to General Diagnostics.

Where to start

New readers

Start with volume one, the Complete Edition. It is a short story collection, so it reads in sections.

That one book tells you whether to continue. Takao divides opinion; if the distance does not close here, it will not close later.

Coming from the anime or drama

Both adaptations centre on the Suiri Karute side, starting from volume one. The source material starts in the same place, so volume one again.

If you would rather start with a novel

Kyuketsuki no Genzai is an option — an original novel released the same day as volume one, written to be readable without the older series.

Adaptations

The series had passed 3.9 million copies as of May 2026, with anime, drama and manga adaptations.

TV anime January 2 to April 3, 2025, 12 episodes / TOKYO MX and others / director: Kazuya Iwata / studio: project No.9 / music: fox capture plan
TV drama April 22 to June 24, 2025, 9 episodes / TV Asahi / screenplay: Hideya Hamada / produced by TV Asahi and Toei
Manga 1 Ameku Takao no Suiri Karute, art by Hiroki Ohara / Shinchosha, 4 volumes (2016-2018)
Manga 2 Sphere no Shitenshi, art by Eri Takenashi / Kodansha, 3 volumes (2024-2026)

Characters and setting

Takao Ameku (27) Deputy director and head of General Diagnostics. She has Asperger’s syndrome and savant traits, and diagnoses through extraordinary recall and calculation
Yu Takanashi (29) The narrator. A former surgeon reassigned to General Diagnostics as a trainee internist
Mai Konoike (25) A resident who admires Takao. Anomaly no Tsuioku is narrated from her point of view
General Diagnostics Founded by Takao’s father to resolve undiagnosable patients and inexplicable incidents. A single-storey red brick building on the hospital roof

Narrating through Takanashi rather than Takao is what keeps the series readable. The author, Mikito Chinen, was born in Okinawa in 1978, trained as an internist at Jikei University School of Medicine, and has been nominated four times for the Japan Booksellers’ Award.

What 21 volumes taught me

The one thing this series does consistently is put the phenomenon first and the name second.

The “curse”, the “vampire”, the “demon”, the “memory of an organ” — none arrive as supernatural claims. An unexplained symptom appears, the people around it attach a convenient label, and Takao neither denies nor affirms the label while accumulating facts.

And an explanation never erases why someone saw meaning there. That aftertaste is common to every volume.

Read for clean resolution and it will disappoint. Read because irresolution is interesting, and 22 books hold the same texture.

Summary

  • Read the Ameku Takao series in publication order
  • Suiri Karute = short stories, Jiken Karute = novel. Not separate storylines
  • “Complete Edition” = the Shincho Bunko nex run reissued with additions. Start there
  • 13 Complete Editions plus 9 new volumes make 22 books as of December 4, 2026
  • 16 volumes landed in seven months between October 2023 and April 2024 — hence the confusion
  • Only Sphere no Shitenshi is chronologically earlier, but it is a demanding entry point
  • New readers: volume one. It tells you whether to continue
  • An anime (Jan-Apr 2025, 12 episodes) and a drama (Apr-Jun 2025, 9 episodes) have both aired
  • Throughout: phenomenon first, name second, and irresolution after the explanation
